Shaw Replacement? 5 Things You Need To Know About £36m Likely Man United Signing

About four weeks ago news emerged that both Manchester United and Manchester City are interested in signing 20-year-old Espanyol left-back Aaron Caricol. The highly-rated Spaniard has been one of the La Liga’s side’s best player’s – hence the growing interest in him.

Manchester City’s interest in the defender is believed to have been sparked as a result of the injury to Benjamin Mendy but I think Manchester United have a better chance of signing him. With Luke Shaw looking out of favour with Jose Mourinho and rumoured to be on his way out of Old Trafford, it would not surprise me if the Reds had already started working on bringing in a replacement for the former Southampton star.

But what do you know about Caricol?

Here are five things we feel you need to know about the Spaniard.

He has a buy out clause

The presence of a release clause in the player’s contract means Espanyol are powerless should either of the Manchester clubs decide to activate the £36million buy out clause and the player wants to leave. Caricol could choose to stay with the Catalan side even if his clause is triggered. However, if he wants out and United or any other club is interested in him and don’t mind paying the reported fee, then Espanyol have no choice other than to sell him.

He recently signed a new contract

The defender signed a new contract with Espanyol last January. His current deal has up until the summer of 2020. This means Espanyol don’t have to sell for less than his buy-out clause if they don’t want to.

He is very defensive minded

The primary role of a left back is to defend and Caricol is strong in this area. He occasionally joins the attack but his main focus is to defend which is something Mourinho will be attracted to.

He models his way around Marcelo

A few months ago, the Espanyol defender was quoted as saying: “I’ve modelled my game on Real Madrid’s Marcelo.”

He has been linked with Real Madrid

The media could be making this up but if it is true and Real Madrid are interested in the 20-year-old then he must be a good player. When it comes to left-backs, Los Blancos rarely get it wrong – Roberto Carlos, Marcelo and Fabio Coentrao just to mention three.
