As it stands, Manchester United have the best defence in the Premier League. They also have the second best attack in England’s top flight but the goals have started to dry out of late.
And this is despite having the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Marcus Rashford and Henrikh Mkhitaryan in the team. The lack of goals in recent games, I believe, is due to Jose Mourinho wanting a more defensively solid team.
This is why it is not a surprise the Red Devils have been linked with signing a defender. Mourinho last summer signed Victor Lindelof from Benfica despite having signed Eric Bailly from Villareal a year before. The duo of Phil Jones and Chris Smalling also seem to have rediscovered their old form but Mourinho is reportedly looking to add his former defender, Raphael Varane, to his team at Old Trafford.
It would not be a surprise if the Reds did sign Varane. United’s boss signed the defender for Real Madrid so is evidently a fan of the former Olympic Lyon player.
However, Varane is now a regular first-team player under Zinedine Zidane and that means the Red Devils have little chance of signing him as the Spanish champions are unlikely to want to part with the player.
Mourinho reportedly knows the chance of signing Varane is small and in light of that fact has an alternative option lined up, in Barcelona’s Samuel Umtiti. The France defender is a regular for the Catalonia club and could be difficult to sign but according to the publication Diario Gol, his wages at Barca are not great and that could play into Manchester United’s hands.
The Reds are reportedly ready to triple the wages of the former Olympic Lyon star in a bid to lure him to Old Trafford. An article by the Express in March this year showed that Umtiti earns just £40,000 a week which means at Manchester United he will be earning as much as £120,000 a week – a tempting proposition for the French international.
The player according to pro Barca media outlet Sport, has a release clause of €60million in his contract which if triggered could force Barca to sell him if the player himself wants to move.
