Although Chelsea, PSG and Arsenal have all been linked with the signing of Atletico Madrid and France international midfielder/attacker Antoine Griezmann, virtually every football fan knows that Manchester United are his likeliest next club.
The Red Devils were according to various media reports (not all of whom can be wrong), close to signing the Atletico star last summer until the court of arbitration for sport confirmed the transfer ban FIFA imposed on Atletico Madrid meant the La Liga side would not have been able to sign a replacement for him.
Griezmann remained in Spain and was rewarded a better contract but everyone knows it is only a matter of time before he does actually leave Madrid.
If newer reports are to be believed, Diego Simeone and co. may have started preparing for the Frenchman’s departure.
According to a column in The SUN, Atletico Madrid are ready to hand Arsenal star Mesut Ozil £200,000-a-week contract which will see the German move to Spain.
The Gunners midfielder has seen himself linked with Manchester United but I doubt if there is a single United fan who would prefer Ozil ahead of Griezmann; who would undoubtedly serve the Reds better.
With Diego Costa already a Madrid player, if Atletico can get Ozil to put pen to paper, it would pave the way for Griezmann to head to England.
The Frenchman has himself confirmed in various interviews that he would like to play alongside United’s Paul Pogba in the Premier League.
Although PSG are also interested, the fact that Griezmann will cost as much as £100 million means that due to UEFA’s financial fair play law the French club are unlikely to sign him. Also with Edison Cavani and Neymar, it beggars the question, where would Griezmann even play?
Barca are also likely to be interested in the summer but I think a move to Manchester United will be too tempting an option for Griezmann to turn down.
