Chelsea have blown hot and cold so far this season. The Premier League champions were thrashed 3-0 away from home by AS Roma in their last Champions League outing but bounced back to defeat Manchester United 1-0 at Stamford Bridge. Their inconsistent form so far this season sees them eight points behind runaway Premier League leaders Manchester City. The Blues currently occupy fourth position which is the last Champions League qualifying spot, and will know if they have to start putting a run together if they do not want to drop out of the top four.
After a two week break as a result of the internationals Chelsea will return to face West Brom away in a match they can’t afford to drop points in if they want do not want to lose further ground to Manchester City and the other teams above them. Unfortunately, Antonio Conte may be without some key players for the clash. Michy Batshuayi is almost certainly out of the game, whilst David Luiz and Tiemoue Bakayoko could also be missing after both players reportedly pulled out of training due to injury last week.
There are also doubts hanging over the head of Eden Hazard but we expect him to be fit for this weekend’s clash at the Hawthorns, especially after Belgium coach Roberto Martinez confirmed the injury suffered in the 3-3 draw with Mexico wasn’t a serious one.
With David Luiz likely to be out, we expect Antonio Conte to start Andreas Christensen alongside Gary Cahill and César Azpilicueta in the centre of Chelsea’s defence. With Victor Moses still nursing an injury, we expect Conte to start Davide Zappacosta as the right wing-back, while Marcos Alonso will maintain his spot on the opposite flank.
N’Golo Kante is also back to partner Cesc Fabregas in the centre of midfield. Unless Hazard fails a late fitness test, we believe Conte will start him against West Brom. Pedro should also get the nod ahead of Willian on the right wing. While Alvaro Morata should start as the striker since he is the only reliable striker Chelsea have right now.
