Mourinho Keen On Signing World Class UCL Winner In £62.5m Deal

Manchester United have had some success in signing players from Chelsea in recent seasons. Last summer, they managed to get Nemanja Matic from their Premier League rivals and three-and-a-half years before that, they signed Juan Mata from the Blues. Last summer, they not only signed Matic but were also linked with the signing of Willian. That deal didn’t happen but Jose Mourinho has not given up on wanting players from his former club.

The Red Devils are reportedly interested in signing David Luiz from Chelsea for £62.5 million now. The former Paris Saint-Germain defender has fallen out with manager Antonio Conte in recent weeks which has led to rumours he could be sold in January. Conte and Luiz fell out after the Brazilian was substituted before the hour in the first match against Roma in the UEFA Champions League group clash at Stamford Bridge last month. David Luiz didn’t take lightly to being taken off.

This led to him missing the match against Manchester United and the UEFA Champions League return game in Italy which Chelsea lost 3-0. Luiz was then replaced in the starting XI with Andreas Christensen, who has taken the opportunity with both hands. There are also murmurs on social media that Luiz could yet again be dropped by Antonio Conte for the match against West Brom this weekend.

Mourinho wants to take advantage of the situation between Conte and Luiz by signing the Brazilian, and in the process, make him the world’s most expensive defender. Mourinho probably feels he has a chance, especially considering the fact that Conte is hardly ever forgiven when he and a player have a fall out. A case in point is the Diego Costa fall out which led to the Spaniard being sold to Atletico Madrid.

But do Manchester United really need David Luiz?

United currently have Eric Bailly, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Victor Lindelof as first team players and they honestly do not need Luiz. However, it could be that Mourinho is ready to sell one or two of Smalling, Jones and Lindelof. All of them have been in and out of the United squad and it would not be a surprise if Mourinho decides David Luiz is an upgrade.

Should Mourinho manage to find new clubs for any of the aforementioned trio, signing David Luiz would be a massive statement of intent.
