Manchester United face FC Basel away from home in the Champions League on Wednesday. The Red Devils need just a point from either of their two remaining group games to guarantee their qualification into the second round of this season’s competition. That shouldn’t be a problem if you consider the manner in which they defeated Newcastle United 4-1 at Old Trafford on Saturday.
With qualification to the second round almost certain, Jose Mourinho is likely to rotate his team this week. The United boss could however be without the trio of Michael Carrick, Phil Jones and Eric Bailly through injury.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic returned to action over the weekend for the first time since April, but we do not expect him to play any part in this match as Mourinho is likely to want to carefully manage the Swede’s recovery. Paul Pogba ,who was fantastic for the Red Devils in the match against Newcastle United, could be called upon again.
David de Gea will maintain his position in goal we believe. In the right-back position we are likely to see Matteo Darmian, who missed the Newcastle game on Saturday. Victor Lindelof started at the weekend and we believe Mourinho will start him against the Swiss champions midweek too. Chris Smalling is expected to partner Lindelof in the centre of defence. Daley Blind, who didn’t make the match day squad against Newcastle, will most likely return to start at left-back.
In midfield, we expect to see a pairing of Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera. The attacking midfield role will likely be Juan Mata, while Jess Lingard will be the right winger for this match. Anthony Martial started and scored against Newcastle but hasn’t seen much action recently, hence why we believe Mourinho will start him against Basel down the left. Romelu Lukaku will be depended upon for the goals up front.
