Man United Dealt Big Injury Blow As Injury Forces Three Players Out Of Basel & Brighton Clashes

Manchester United have been dealt a big injury blow ahead of the club’s Champions League clash with FC Basel. This was confirmed by Jose Mourinho, who revealed during a press conference that Phil Jones, who was injured on national team duty with England during the last international break, will miss the next two games.

The former Blackburn Rovers defender will miss the clash against Basel today according to Mourinho, as well as the Premier League match against Brighton and Hove Albion at the weekend as a result of a thigh injury. Jones was injured in England’s friendly match against Germany last week and has been sidelined since.

England manager Gareth Southgate claimed the injury was a minor one after the game, but Jones has unfortunately not been able to play for the Red Devils since the international break. He missed the 4-1 thrashing of Newcastle United last Saturday.

Mourinho will also not be able to call upon the duo of Michael Carrick and Eric Bailly for the match against the Swiss as both men are still nursing injury. The trio of Ashley Young, Juan Mata and Antonio Valencia will also be missing the match, more due to Mourinho choosing to leave them out of the travelling squad, rather than because of injury.

United needs a draw in their last two group game matches in the Champions League to qualify for the second round of the competition. They won their first four games in the group.

  1. When are United going to replace the calibre of Bruce and Pallister, Stam or Vidic? The present replacements for these positions don’t seem to last more than 3 games before they are injured again. Surely there are players out there or already at the Club who could replace Jones, Bailly, Smalling etc.

    • They have players like Tuanzebe in defence who is as good any one at the back and McTominay apart from Pogba is as good as anyone in midfield

      • Then you have a manager who is too hesitant to consider the best of the Academy players. Pereira who decided to go on loan because of a lack of playing time is showing United the way that more of their youth academy players will opt for if the trend is not reversed and United will lose the attraction of young players for the academies. One introduction to the first team per season is not enough when you have players ready now like Tuanzebe, Fosu-Mensah, Pereira etc.

  2. The headline for this article is misleading as two were already out and as for Jones ?.Time and time again we have a discussion about Jones ‘ fitness and whether he is worth keeping.I get that most Englishmen are proud of playing for their country and would do most anything to do so but to put yourself at risk for a friendly, especially when most of Southgates favourites had already pulled out.I am sorry but once again Jones displays that he is courageous and would go through a brick wall should his manager ask him to but just maybe he should remember that he is prone to injury. He should have taken the intelligent decision and pulled out of the game. Then again nobody ever accused Jones of being intelligent

    • This seems to apply to Bailly too, he seems to be always injured. He has not had a decent run of consecutive games since joining United. Where are the likes of Bruce and Palmister, Stam or Ferdinand and Vidic? Jones and Bailly seem to spend more time in the treatment room than on the pitch.

    • We are supposed to learn from History, in this case Jones must have access to some very deep secret and holding United to ransom. He should be off the books by now. The sad thing is Smalling saying he would be frightened facing the United attack at the moment. Someone should have told Basle. By all accounts Lukaku went missing United lost 1 – 0 and Mourinho did his usual pragmatist thing. Then most worrying is he is still being mentioned in the same breath as Bale, another Jones. I would not pick him to play for our over forties team. Everyone except United are clear on what should happen to Jones yet he is still there.

  3. This is aquestion to Mourinho,Do you mean Manchester United defender named Jones will miss the clash against Brighton and Hove Albion at the weekend as a result of a thigh injury?

  4. I preferred either Rojo or Baily to start the game against Brihton and Hove Albion at the heart of the centre back to be featured with Christ Smalling it may be possible.
