Week 11 Premier League Scores and Highlights

There are some really good matchups this weekend, yet again. Sunday’s lineup looks especially tasty. Saturday features several games with teams battling to get out of the relegation zone as well as those trying to maintain their place at the middle of the table.

Arsenal v Fulham

This will be a match that should beg several questions. First one being which Arsenal team will show up. There’s the team that scored 2 goals on Schalke midweek as well as running out 7-5 winners over Reading in the Capital One Cup. There is also the team that gave up 2 goals to Schalke midweek and didn’t even bother turning up against Manchester United last weekend until the absolute last minute of stoppage time. Fulham has pieced together a decent season so far with back to back draws following a win over Aston Villa. This could be an interesting match and one that I’m very hesitant to put any predictions on. Nevertheless, I’m going to predict an Arsenal victory here. In reality it could go any which way, but this is one of those matches that Arsenal really needs to go out and get a win. Fulham will certainly fight back and could easily get a draw.

Arsenal (L, W, L, W, L)                 Fulham (D, D, W, D, L)

Everton v Sunderland

Everton has put together a string of draws over their past 4 matches. Meanwhile Sunderland has been struggling to score goals and get results. I’m predicting a 2 – 0 win for Everton. At the very most Sunderland might pull off a draw, but I would be surprised if they did.

Everton (D, D, D, D W)                 Sunderland (L, D, D, L, W)

Reading v Norwich City

I’m going to go ahead and give Reading their first win of the season. I’m assuming Reading will play this one pretty wide open and go for the win from the start. I’m expecting an end to end game epitomizing what everyone loves about the Premier League. Norwich has been able to pull out some very interesting results this year (like their win over Arsenal) but other times have looked very mediocre. Recent results for Reading have not quite gone their way, but this is the one where I’m predicting their first Premier League win for 2012.

Reading (D, D, L, D, D)                 Norwich City (L, L, W, D, W)

Southampton v Swansea City

Swansea has not done so great on the road. This season they have 1 win away and they have had some ups and downs as well. Their recent form has been looking much better and Michael Laudrup seems to be getting more right than wrong. They were unlucky to lose to Man City and got themselves a deserved draw against Chelsea. Southampton, meanwhile, continue with their poor start to the season. Despite being the only one of the bottom three with a win, they are still at the bottom of the table with 4 points. Swansea should be able to win this one, but I’m not so sure it will be easy. Swansea has struggled to convert their chances, particularly on the road while Southampton has been able to score goals at home. This is another game that could really open up since both teams will be going for the win. I’m still predicting that Swansea will come out on top. I’m picking a 2 – 1 win for them, but they could get plenty more if Southampton start to spread themselves too thin.

Southampton (L, D, L, L, L)          Swansea City (L, D, W, L, D)

Stoke City v Queens Park Rangers

I’m going to do it again and predict a QPR win this week. All they will need is the one goal to get something out of this match. Stoke has never scored any more than 2 goals in a match and only one of those was at home. They have shown a preference for sitting back and defending, only allowing 1 goal at home all season. QPR has come close on a few occasions and there have been some glimpses of what they can do, it’s just going to be a matter of whether they can put that all together on Saturday and overcome what will be a solid defense. I’m still going to predict a QPR win for this despite the difficulty.

Stoke City (W, D, L, D, L)             QPR (L, L, D, L, D)

Wigan Athletic v West Bromwich Albion

I have been impressed with both teams this season. I like the way that they both play so this could be a good match to watch. West Brom has really impressed with their results and they have moved their way up to 5th, tied on points with Everton and Tottenham. Both teams have gotten good results lately, particularly Wigan’s 1 – 0 victory over Tottenham at White Hart Lane. I’m going to predict a draw for this one since I can see both teams cancelling one another out. West Brom is probably the better team, but Wigan will make it hard at the DW.

Wigan (L, D, L, W, W)                 West Brom (D, W, L, L, W)

Aston Villa v Manchester United

Manchester United’s offense has been clicking lately while Aston Villa has struggled to score goals while maintaining a negative goal difference. Their results recently have been improving, but they are coming up against a United side that is finally starting to find it’s form. Their defensive unit is starting to function a little more with the stability of a number 1 keeper in goal.

Aston Villa (D, L, L, D, W)           Manchester United (L, W, W, W, W)

Manchester City v Tottenham Hotspur

I have no idea what to expect from this match. Both teams have been looking poor lately. The only thing that has been getting Manchester City by has been the fact that they are filled with superstars that can get it right once and awhile. This is a squad that is really lacking a team mentality. Unless Mancini can get them together and working as a team, they are going to continue to struggle. Their Champions League draw midweek pretty much sums up their season to date: Lots of frustration, some shining moments of brilliance, and disappointment. They have not been great at the back, but have somehow managed to keep from losing in the Premier League. Tottenham has probably been even more frustrating than Manchester City. They are certainly not out of it this season, but they have not impressed in the same way they did last year. One statistic they do have going for them is their ability to win on the road. At the moment they are 3 – 0 – 1 away from home in the Premier League. Still, for this match I’m predicting a draw, something like 2 – 2 or possibly 1 – 1.

Manchester City (W, W, W, W, D)            Tottenham (W, W, L, W, L)

Newcastle United v West Ham United

Newcastle is another team that has been frustrating and not getting the same results they did last year, or that people are expecting from them. Facing West Ham they may be able to pick up some points and set themselves up for a run of games that they can get wins in. West Ham has had some good performances lately, particularly holding Man City last weekend.

I know that this will probably be a good game to watch, particularly for neutrals and in reality it is yet another that could go any which way. I’m going to stick with a prediction of a Newcastle win.

Newcastle United (D, L, D, W, D)             West Ham United (W, L, W, L, D)

Chelsea v Liverpool

Liverpool has finally started to show some signs of life and the ability to score some goals. If Chelsea is able to get their defense in order they could shut down Liverpool, particularly if they can mark Suarez out of the game. However, their recent defensive woes will mean that this probably will not happen. Instead it will most likely become a matter of who scores the most goals. In this case I’m predicting Chelsea to be able to do so and get the win. Both teams have had their fair share of defensive problems this season so goals will surely come from both teams. Liverpool may not be able to dominate as much as they have in other matches this season considering the strength of Chelsea’s midfield, but then again, they have seemed to do better playing the long ball and counterattacking this season to get goals.

Chelsea (W, W, W, L, D)              Liverpool (W, D, W, D, D)
