Manchester United Triggers Clause In Ashley Young’s Contract

According to a report by the Daily Mirror, 32-year-old Ashley Young will be signing a new bumper deal with Manchester United, worth £6 million-a-year. The former Aston Villa and Watford player’s current contract is due to expire at the end of this season but United have decided to trigger a clause in Young’s contract which gives him another year at the club.

While Luke Shaw continues to deal with injury problems and poor form, Young has become the Red Devils’ Mr dependent in the left-back position. Despite not being a left-back naturally, Young has done considerably well for United whilst playing in that role so far this season.

The £130,000-a-week player missed the first four United matches of the season but he has been a regular in the starting eleven ever since his impressive showing against Everton in September, which United won 4-0. His performances for the Red Devils forced England manager Gareth Southgate to call Young up to the national team for the first time in four years.

Ashley Young had been linked with a move away from United in the summer. A couple of Chinese clubs were said to be interested in him but Jose Mourinho stood firm, preferring to keep the very versatile player in his team. Stoke City were also said to have made contact with United for the player in the summer, which Mourinho rejected. His versatility and team spirit must have been at the back of the Portuguese coach’s mind when he was rejecting all the offers for Young – if there truly were any.

Earlier yesterday we reportedly the news that Manchester United had triggered a clause in Ander Herrera’s contract which enables them to keep the Spaniard for another year. It remains to be seen whether the club will be able to reach an agreement with Marouane Fellaini though. The Belgian has been strongly linked with a move to Turkey of late.
