Judging by the rumours in the media over the past couple of days, there is a chance that Willian could be leaving Chelsea in either January or during the summer transfer window. The Brazilian has been linked with a move to Manchester United to reunite with Jose Mourinho, who is a big fan of the player, and is said to be keen to bring him to Old Trafford.
The Brazilian international himself has confirmed he is fed up with the lack of game time at Chelsea. This could mean he will be open to a move away from Stamford Bridge should the opportunity arise. Chelsea would also need to find a replacement for Willian should he leave. This is even more important if you consider the fact that Antonio Conte has recently changed from a four midfield system to a 3-5-2.
And the Blues could have been boosted in their chase to sign one of their long-term targets. In the summer of 2016 Chelsea were linked with the signing of the then Sporting Lisbon midfielder, Joao Mario. The 24-year-old chose to sign for Inter Milan rather than move to Chelsea or Manchester United, who were also linked with his signing. The Portuguese midfielder has fallen out of favour at Inter Milan under manager Luciano Spalletti, who prefers Matias Vecino and Borja Valero.
Now, according to Team Talk, Inter Milan are ready to sell the player for as little as £26 million, which is far cheaper than the €40 million plus €5 million in bonuses the Serie A giants paid to sign him from Sporting Lisbon nearly 18 months ago. For £26m, Chelsea would be getting a very good midfielder. His versatility means he can play as a central attacking midfielder as well as on both flanks.
Joao Mario would not only be a good replacement for Willian, who is likely to be Manchester United bound, but as well as a replacement for Cesc Fabregas in the centre of Chelsea’s midfield. This is for when Antonio Conte chooses to rest the Spaniard, or is forced to leave him out due to suspensions, injuries or a lack of form.
