If reports in the British and Belgian media yesterday are anything to go by, Manchester United have received a big boost in their bid to keep their number one goalkeeper David De Gea at Old Trafford. The Spaniard has constantly been linked with a move to Real Madrid in the last few years. In 2015, everyone thought he was on his way to join Real Madrid but the deal broke down on the very last day of the transfer window that year.
Ever since, De Gea has constantly been linked with Real Madrid. This is despite Madrid themselves having a quality goalkeeper in Keylor Navas. The Costa Rican is in my opinion in the top 10 in the world in the goalkeeping department but the decision makers at Real Madrid do not seem to agree.
The good news for Manchester United and the fans of the club is, Real Madrid are already considering other options which could mean the Red Devils get to keep De Gea for couple of years more. According to a report by The SUN who are citing reports from Belgium as a source, Real Madrid are interested in signing Chelsea star Thibaut Courtois and if they do, they won’t be have a need for De Gea.
According to the report, Belgium’s number one Thibaut Courtois is stalling on signing a new deal with Chelsea and Real Madrid are aware of this and could take advantage of the situation to sign him from Chelsea. The Belgian, who is valued at £36 million, has just 18 months left on his contract and has stalled as Chelsea have not offered him anything close to the £210,000-a-week deal he feels he deserves.
Courtois is a quality keeper, although definitely not as good as De Gea who is in a class of his own, and should Madrid sign him, they will have two quality keepers they can rely on – if they keep Navas that is – which could well mean there is no Room for De Gea.
It is pretty certain Real Madrid still wants De Gea but if the reports of them wanting Courtois is true, it means they have admitted defeat in their attempt to sign him which is kudos to Manchester United.
