Five Things To Know About Arsenal New Boy Konstantinos Mavropanos

Recent reports have stated that Arsenal is in advanced talks to sign 20-year old centre-back Konstantinos Mavropanos from PAS Giannina. But, what do we know about the young Greek defender?

He’s come highly recommended:

Konstantinos Mavropanos is the first player to be identified by Arsenal new super scout Sven Mislintat – the man responsible for unearthing gems such as Aubamayang, Hummels, Lewandowski and OusmaneDembele. Arsenal fans will be disappointed that their first signing of the window is an unknown defender, but the club invested a lot in Mislintat to bring in hidden gems like this, and the fans must put their trust in him.

The transfer fee:

Reports indicate the fee is set for around £1.9m, which makes it a relatively safe bet for the club. If he doesn’t make it, it’s likely that they’ll make the same on a sale based on the fact he has played for Arsenal. If he does make it, he could become the commanding centre half Arsenal has been calling out for.

His role in the team:

After confirming that the club are close to completing the deal, Arsene Wenger said that he wasn’t ready to play for Arsenal and would be loaned out. Reports suggest a move to Werder Bremen is most likely, as both clubs have strong relations from dealings such as Serge Gnabry’s transfer in 2016. This will be a real disappointment for fans, who feel the club need someone to come in and make an instant impact.

Career so far:

Konstantinos Mavropanos made his debut just over 12 months ago for PAS Giannina FC, and has gone on to make a total of 20 appearances, including 14 this season. His performances have earned rave reviews, with experts claiming he’s the best young defender to come out of Greece in 10 years. With this in mind, it’s understandable why Arsene feels a loan move would be beneficial – the step up from Greece to the Premier League is likely to be too high for one so inexperienced.

Style of play:

At 6’3, the young defender certainly has the build to survive in the Premier League, and his aerial ability has been noted as one of his main strengths. Along with this, he’s quick – an essential asset for any top player in the modern game. These abilities are a great base for any young centre half, and his aggression will go down well with fans, however Konstantinos Mavropanos will have to improve his control, passing and the tactical side of his game if he is to survive this huge step up.

Greece has a proud history of producing top class central defenders, with Kostas Manolas, Kyriakos Papadopoulos and SokratisPapastathopoulos already well established in Europe’s major leagues. If Konstantinos Mavropanos can match, or better them, he’ll certainly have a big future in the game.
