Arsenal’s sensational record breaking signing of Dortmund’s Aubameyang may be off. Although the drawn-out negotiations led to fee being agreed with the German club and personal terms with the hot shot striker, it was always on the condition Dortmund found a replacement.
As reported earlier by virtually all the major media outlets, Dortmund is eager to sign Batshuayi from Chelsea on loan to replace Aubameyang, and in turn Chelsea had their eye on Arsenal’s Giroud. Although Arsenal eventually agreed to fee of around £20m for the French target man, Chelsea have grown cold on the deal due to how long Arsenal took to accept.
Another twist is that Dortmund’s summer recruit, Yarmolenko is on the side lines, although provisionally brought in to offset Dembele’s departure to Barcelona, Dortmund cannot afford to lose Aubameyang and not have the Ukrainian international available unless they get someone in.
Makes one wonder why Arsenal had to spend two weeks negotiating with Dortmund for Aubameyang when they were ready to pay as much as £60m for him. Arsenal should have just paid the £60m for Aubameyang at least more than a week ago instead of leaving it this late. It appears nothing was learnt from the Thomas Lemar situation of last summer.
Although I believe we would still get Aubameyang but it may come at a price, we may have to let go Giroud to Dortmund in order to get the African. A situation that I personally would have preferred we avoided. With Walcott and Sanchez gone and Aubameyang illegible for the Europa league, the aim should have been to keep the Frenchman.
The hope is the club can manage to still get Aubameyang without letting Giroud go. But this one certainly looks set to go right to the wire, with plenty more twists and turns to be expected.
