Premier League Scores and Highlights

Premier League Scores: Result and Highlights from the EPL Fixture between Fulham v Sunderland on Sunday, November 18, 2012.

Result: Fulham 1 – 3 Sunderland

Location: Craven Cottage – Fulham

Fulham – 1 Sunderland – 3
Mladen Petric (62’) Steven Fletcher (50’)
Carlos Cuellar (65’)
Stephane Sessegnon (70’)

My prediction for this match-up was a 2 – 1 win for Fulham. The first half started out with Fulham dominating and getting some decent looks on goal, particularly with Dimitar Berbatov. The shape of the game completely changed in the 30th minute when Brede Haangeland was sent off for what was deemed a reckless challenge. For me it was a yellow card if anything at all. I suppose that the precedent has been set for giving the red card to players leaving their feet, but I think it was a 50/50 that was up for either player. Haangeland did leave the ground with both feet, but he won the ball with one foot and his studs were down. It was a harsh red card in my opinion.

It was only after this sending off that Sunderland began to get into the match themselves. Fulham supporters were also looking for the referee to hand out cards for every tackle on a Fulham player. The teams went into the dressing room at the half level at 0 – 0, but Fulham were certainly the better team.

In the 50th minute Sunderland got the first goal of the match through Steven Fletcher. John Arne Risse came close hitting the top bar, but the ball kicked out into play where Adam Johnson sent a long ball over the Fulham defense that put Fletcher through one on one with Mark Schwarzer.

In the 62nd minute Mladen Petric pulled one back for Fulham. After a nifty one two with Hugo Rodellega, Damien Duff crossed low into the box where Petric ran in to put the them level. This did not last long as in the 65th minute Sunderland won a corner leading to a fantastic headed goal by Carlos Cuellar. In the 70th minute Stephane Sessegnon took what should be the goal of the week shooting from outside of the box and swerving it across goal, off the post and in to give Sunderland the 3 -1 lead.

The match itself was a fun one to watch, like most matches between mid table teams. Lot’s of end to end action with some nice passing and movement from Fulham despite being down to 10 men. I liked seeing them continue to battle and push for the win. It was very unfortunate that the result was another one determined, in part, by a poor refereeing decision.

Fulham and Martin Jol will be very disappointed with the loss, and upset with the decision to send off Haangeland. On the other side Sunderland and Martin O’Neill will be very pleased with their first away win of the season. Their second win of the season moves them up one place in the table to 15th.
