The second day of matches was filled with dramatic highlights, which is what I love about the Premier League. The day began with Chelsea winning 2-0 over Wigan. While the Blues looked convincingly strong in the opening minutes, they had newcomer Eden Hazard and veteran Petr Cech to thank for the win. Hazard was instrumental in creating their goals in the 2nd minute (Branislov Ivanovic) and a 7th minute penalty converted by Frank Lampard. Hazard looked good throughout his 64 minutes during his Premier League debut and was the best player on the pitch along with Cech. Cech ended the day with 4 saves, the only 4 of Wigan’s 14 shots to be on target. Wigan was dominate in their attacking, but ultimately Chelsea was able to sit back and hold them off thanks to their 2 goals within 10 minutes to start the match. While the match began with style and hope, it ended with Chelsea adopting a defensive tactic usually used by lower tier teams such as Wigan.

Manchester City’s opening defense of their title began in high drama style. Carlos Tevez was again able to show off his undershirt design after netting the opening goal in the 40th minute was about the only sign of life in the first half with the match largely mired in the midfield. The second half did much to spark the game when Southampton’s leading scorer, Rickie Lambert, was brought on as a substitute and netted his first goal in the Premier League in the 59th minute. From this point on the attacking play of both team’s was brought to the fore. In the 68th minute Southampton was able to take a surprisingly lead with a superb break-away goal featuring 6 Southampton players forward in the counterattack. The ball ultimately fell to 2nd half sub Steven Davis who slotted the ball home. The lead only lasted 4 minutes until Edin Dzeko was able to pick up his goal in the 72nd minute to level the score at 2. In the 80th minute Samir Nasri put the game away and wrapped up City’s first 3 points of the season. City should have done better to beat newcomers Southampton having dominated play throughout the match. David Silva’s tame penalty miss in the 17th minute was telling of their languid start. It wasn’t until Southampton showed their attacking that the game finally picked up.
