Alan Pardew should be feeling somewhat relieved, along with Newcastle supporters, as Newcastle United was finally able to stop their losing streak at four matches. Demba Ba’s 13th minute penalty was enough for the win. It also helped to have Wigan down to ten men when Maynor Figueroa was sent off for bringing down Papiss Cisse in the box. Wigan had two great chances prior to this, but following the sending off and ensuing penalty, they were second best and never looked like really threatening.
Chieck Tiota looked great in the center of the field and his replacement, Gael Bigirimana put the game to rest with an outstanding shot. He also became the first player from Burundi to score in the Premier League (random trivia fact).
My 2-1 prediction may have been closer if not for Wigan going down to ten men, but I did predict a Newcastle win. The win keeps Newcastle in 14th place tied on points with Fulham. Wigan’s loss keeps them level on points with Aston Villa, but drops them down to 16th place with 14 points.
