This was a match that I predicted as a 1-1 draw, but with the caveat that anything could happen in a Manchester Derby. City came into the match allowing the fewest goals (11 this season) while United has had the most goals (37). It was also a clash between the top two teams in the Premier League.
Manchester City had the first good chance, but Mario Balotelli completely fluffed the shot and sent it high into the stands. In the 16th minute Wayne Rooney opened the scoring, against the run of play with a low rolling shot past 2 defenders (and through the legs of Gareth Barry) into the corner of Joe Hart’s net. Rooney doubled their lead in the 29th minute with another shot from inside the box that went through the legs of Kolo Toure and into the bottom corner of Hart’s net to give United the 2 – 0 lead.
The biggest blow for City was having to take off their captain, and the anchor of their defense, Vincent Kompany, in only the 21st minute. In the first half Joe Hart had to pick the ball out of his own net twice without making any saves and many times looked nervous. The first half ended with United looking the better side and having the two goal lead. This is not to say that they looked spectacular, but they were closing down City quickly and getting the ball forward into dangerous areas.
In the 58th minute United should have been up 3 – 0 with Ashley Young following up a Robin van Persie shot by putting the rebound into the goal. Instead the linesman got it all wrong and put his flag up for offside. This was followed up by a 60th minute goal by Yaya Toure. Instead of United being up 3 with 30 minutes to play, Manchester City was given a way back by the linesman’s failure.
The second half saw the involvement of the referee changing the shape of the result as Manchester United had a shout for a penalty in the 65th minute when Patrice Evra was fouled inside the box. This should have been a penalty for the Red Devils and a 4 – 0 lead, but for the terrible decisions by the referee.
Pablo Zabaleta was able to bring the teams level in the 86th minute after slotting the ball away off a corner. This was followed up in the 3rd minute of stoppage time when Robin van Persie took a free kick on the edge of the box. The free kick looped over the wall and took a deflection on its way into the net past Hart’s outstretched arms. After the celebrations a dirty City fan was involved in throwing coins at the United players resulting in Rio Ferdinand getting a cut above his eye. The fans must surely be banned for life. I really thought the whistle should have blown at this point.
In the end United was able to make the most of their chances despite City holding the majority of the possession. The win bolsters United’s drive through the Christmas season and leaves them 6 points clear at the top of the table on 39 points compared to City’s 33. Another massive win for United and a disappointment for City, the match itself was anything but disappointing and was full of excitement throughout. The Manchester United win means that City is no longer undefeated in this Premier League season.
