Result: Stoke City 1 – 1 Everton
Location: Britannia Stadium – Stoke City
|Stoke – 1||Everton – 1|
|Kenwyne Jones (52’)||Ryan Shawcross (OG 36’)|
The main talking point of the match will most likely be Marouane Fellaini’s unseen headbutt which will surely result in retroactive action by the FA. The match was a scrappy affair and very even from both sides. The important part for Stoke was their ability to defend against an Everton side that always gets double digit shots. It was interesting to see that Stoke really had the better chances with 5 of their 13 shots on target compared to 2 out of 10 for Everton.
Ryan Shawcross started the scoring with a fantastic flicked header over his own goal-keeper for an own goal. Steven Pienaar put the pressure on with his 36th minute cross into the box where Shawcross inexplicably attempted to head the ball back towards goal.
Stoke was able to get an equalizer in the 52nd minute through Kenwyne Jones. With the long ball played in from the center circle towards the box Jones rose high to head the ball down into the corner of the Everton goal.
Everton did not let up and had a good chance near the end, but weren’t able to do enough for more than a draw. A draw certainly suits both teams for now since it keeps Everton in fourth place and Stoke in 9th.
