Result: Wigan Athletic 0 – 1 Arsenal
Location: DW Stadium – Wigan Athletic
|Wigan – 0||Arsenal – 1|
|Mikel Arteta (PEN 60’)|
To say that Arsenal were lucky to come away with a win is probably an understatement. They did have their chances, but their only goal came on a rather soft penalty in which Theo Walcott went down rather easily (and somewhat theatrically) to draw the foul in the box. To be fair Jean Beausejour shouldn’t have given the referee a reason to blow his whistle. Arteta’s penalty shot was placed to the keeper’s left side with Ali Al Habsi guessing wrong and diving to his right.
The balance of play was quite even throughout the match with Arsenal getting more of their shots on goal. Wigan managed 14 shots but only 3 were on target. They did get 6 of those shots from inside the box, the same as the Gunners, who had 11 shots and 4 on target.
Certainly not a dominating performance from them, but just enough to get a result which moves them up to third place, at least temporarily, with 30 points.
