Result: Stoke City 3 – 1 Liverpool

Location: Britannia Stadium – Stoke City

Stoke – 3 Liverpool – 1
Jonathan Walters (5’) Steven Gerrard (PEN 2’)
Kenwyne Jones (12’)
Jonathan Walters (49’)

The match started quite controversially as Luis Suarez went down easily in the box only 36 seconds into the match. Ryan Shawcross was certainly grabbing Suarez shirt, but Suarez waited till he was into the penalty area to fall down and draw the penalty. Steven Gerrard sent Asmir Begovic the wrong way to dispatch the penalty. This was followed up by a 6th minute goal from Johnathan Walters. The long ball was played forward where Walters got through on Jose Reina to even the score at 1-1. Stoke doubled their goal tally in the 12th minute through Kenwyne Jones. The first half saw both teams trading possession and Stoke doing well with maintaining control of the ball and making it difficult for Liverpool to get into the game. The first half saw Stoke with the better chances and better conversions as well. Stoke had 4 shots with 3 on target and 2 goals, while Liverpool managed only 2 shots and 1 on target, coming from a Gerrard shot.

The second half was pretty much more of the same for both teams. Liverpool looked increasingly frustrated and it was showing for much of the half. I would say that at times it looked like men against boys. Stoke’s physical style really put off Liverpool who attempted to get physical, but just can’t quite pull it off, certainly not against a team like Stoke. Liverpool had most of the possession, but their attacks broke down far too often. The win for Stoke was truly deserved and sees them swap positions with Liverpool moving up to 8th on 28 points. It was a quality performance for Stoke and shows that Brendan Rodgers still has a ways to go with this Liverpool team.
