Week 20 EPL Predictions: Todd’s Premier League Picks [updated]

Here are my predictions for Match Day 20 of the English Premier League. Be sure to check out Week 19 Premier League Predictions and the Premier League Weekly TV Schedule for American audiences.

As far as predictions last week went, I didn’t do so great, however, I wasn’t really surprised by any of the results except perhaps Sunderland’s win over Manchester City. Here are my picks for this week’s Premier League matches.

Sunderland v Tottenham: Tottenham’s form lately is truly flying, but they could be in for a hiccup against Sunderland. Sunderland were able to hold off Manchester City midweek with a sturdy defense and nabbing a goal along with it. I do think they will have a more difficult time with Tottenham considering Spurs form compared to Man City. Sunderland are desperate for results and will take a draw if needed. Tottenham’s recent form is far better than City’s and Sunderland are going to have a more difficult time keeping them from scoring. I’m picking Tottenham to come out on top in this one with a close win. Though there’s always the chance that Sunderland will grab themselves a late goal for the draw, considering the Spurs difficulties closing out games.

Sunderland (L, W, L, W, W)              Tottenham (W, L, W, D, W)

Aston Villa v Wigan Athletic: Two teams battling to avoid relegation face off on Saturday. Aston Villa has been thoroughly beaten by two London clubs in the past week and will certainly still be hurting. Wigan have not had any luck at all this season and have failed to put together any convincing run at any point. There are many questions to be asked of both teams leading up to this game and it’s going to be a difficult scrappy match from both clubs. I’m going to pick Aston Villa to bounce back and get a win. They have a strong attack that should be able to break down Wigan easier than Chelsea or Tottenham. On the other side Wigan have been exceptionally poor recently and have a terrible away record with just 2 wins and 7 losses, while also giving up 17 goals and only scoring 6 on the road.

Aston Villa (D, D, W, L, L)                Wigan (L, D, L, L, L)

Fulham v Swansea City: Fulham managed to get a result, though it certainly wasn’t convincing. Their one goal, courtesy of Dimitar Berbatov, came due to a goal keeping error from a poor Southampton. Swansea won’t give up goals so easily and play a much more flowing style than Southampton. Fulham will struggle to get anything out of this. I’m predicting a Swansea win to break their current 4 game winless streak.

Fulham (L, W, L, L, D)             Swansea City (W, L, L, D, D)

Manchester United v West Bromwich Albion: Manchester United are currently unbeaten in 7 matches, with the draw against Swansea last weekend being their only non-win. West Brom had a good run interrupted by 3 consecutive losses and have since bounced back with a draw and two wins. United has been less than convincing recently, particularly in defense, but they have shown the ability to do just enough to get something out of a game even when not playing well. In their midweek match against QPR, West Brom got fairly lucky to come away with all three points. They’re winning goal probably should’ve been called back for a foul on the keeper and QPR also should have had a penalty. In the end West Brom will most likely push United to the brink and get their goals (particularly considering the speed of Shane Long up front compared to United’s back line), but United is stronger than that. I’m predicting a close Manchester United win, probably another one of those come from behind and grab a late winner sort.

Manchester United (W, W, W, D, W)                   West Brom (L, L, D, W, W)

Norwich City v Manchester City: Yet another difficult trip for Manchester City and a chance for Norwich to impress and take another top team to the brink. Manchester City has been struggling recently against teams that they should be beating. In their last five matches they have drawn to Everton and lost to Manchester United at home, won away to Newcastle, then in the last two scraped a last second win over bottom of the table Reading at home and then lost to Sunderland away. Not exactly a convincing stretch of games. Norwich may have lost 2 in a row, but they have lost to two teams that have shown the ability to put on good displays, particularly Chelsea midweek. I can’t see Man City coming away from this with more than a draw and I’m predicting a close Norwich City win.

Norwich City (W, W, W, L, L)            Manchester City(D, L, W, W, L)

Reading v West Ham United: Reading have been showing recent signs of life having played well against Manchester City and Swansea City in consecutive matches, but have only been able to do so through a highly defensive setup. In the past 5 matches they have scored only 2 goals, both coming in their 5-2 loss to Arsenal. This could be a close match, but I’m not sure that Reading quite has what it takes to get a win over West Ham. I think West Ham’s midweek rest will give them additional strength to go forward and break down a Reading side that could be getting tired by Saturday. I’m picking a West Ham win in a close, hard fought match.

Reading (L, L, L, L, D)             West Ham United (L, W, L, D, L)

Stoke City v Southampton: I’m predicting another solid showing for Stoke City and another win as well. Southampton is finally getting things together defensively, but they are coming up against a strong Stoke team that does not allow goals and is finding ways to get goals. They may not be able to get the 2 I’m predicting, but I do think they will manage a win and continue to be the stingiest defense in the EPL.

Stoke (W, D, D, D, W)             Southampton (D, L, W, L, D)

Arsenal v Newcastle United: What a match this could be. Newcastle United showed some signs of returning to last season’s form, but this was also during a rain soaked match at Old Trafford in which the United defense looked a shambles at times. There is a chance for Newcastle to get a draw, or even pull off a win, but I’m picking Arsenal to come away with all three points. They have had the whole week to prepare and will not be nearly as worn out as Newcastle, who did have to play a tough match in less than ideal conditions.

Arsenal (D, L, W, W, W)          Newcastle (W, L, L, W, L)

Everton v Chelsea: A win for Everton would see them over take Chelsea for either 3rd or 4th place (depending on what Tottenham does). This is going to be a massive game for them. Chelsea is certainly in form with 3 wins in a row, while Everton has been doing well enough with a 7 game unbeaten run at the moment. I don’t think I’m prepared to give a win for Everton in this one, Chelsea has been too solid recently and Everton are still without Darron Gibson and Marouane Fellaini. I do think that Everton might be able to salvage a draw in this one, but I’m predicting a Chelsea win. Chelsea has been far too dominant lately. They have shored up their defense and are starting to click with their attack.

Everton (D, W, D, W, W)                   Chelsea (D, L, W, W, W)

Queens Park Rangers v Liverpool: This is certainly a match that Liverpool expects to win and be able to do so comfortably. I suppose we will see if this happens. Liverpool’s new style of play has been hit or miss all season long. They have been largely inconsistent and never seem to be able to get themselves into a run of form. Queens Park Rangers are a whole other story. They are bottom of the table and not really looking like they’re going to pull themselves back up. I’m predicting a win for Liverpool, provided they start converting their chances, but QPR is far from being Stoke, so it shouldn’t be a problem.

QPR (D, D, W, L, L)                           Liverpool (W, W, L, W, L)

*W/D/L stats are based on the past 5 Premier League competitions

Let me know what you think. Do you think I picked them right? Any changes you would make?
