Manchester United started out the match strong and had Nemanja Vidic return to the bench (as I predicted). Robin van Persie opened the goal scoring in the 16th minute thanks to some defensive mistakes from Sunderland. John O’Shea missed on his clearance as the ball fell to van Persie inside the box where he made no mistake in putting United up 1 – 0. This was quickly followed up with a 19th minute goal thanks to a beautiful curling shot from the left side of the box near the touch line from Tom Cleverly. United should have gotten two more goals from Rooney before the 25th minute but he narrowly missed both.
James McClean nearly got a goal back after Rio Ferdinand’s defensive mistake. He should have rolled it off to Steven Fletcher, but took the shot himself directly at David de Gea. The half time ended with both teams having a few more chances, but nothing clear. United dominated the first half and should have been up by 4 or 5.
The second half started out with United marching down and Wayne Rooney putting one off the crossbar followed by Ashley Young shooting over. Sunderland then had a great chance at the other end with de Gea making two saves.
Sunderland’s most dangerous chances came off of corners, many of which David de Gea looked very strong on. Connor Wickham did come close on a shot from outside the box, but it sailed high over the bar. Wayne Rooney added a third goal for United in the 59th minute. Robin van Persie dribbled past three defenders at the by-line and put his low cross across the front of the goal for Rooney to knock in.
Nemanja Vidic came on in the 68th minute for Rio Ferdinand making his return following a long time out with a knee injury. At the same time Sunderland subbed on Frasier Campbell. In the minute Sessegnon sent in a cross from the left side across goal to the back post where Campbell headed in completely unmarked to make it 3 – 1. Very disappointing and poor defending from Manchester United.
The last 20 minutes or so had both teams exchanging possession, but United getting most of the better chances. Sunderland’s loss keeps them in the relegation battle. Meanwhile, United’s win keeps them 6 points clear of Man City at the top.
