This Saturday is the start of the knockout stages in the 2014 World Cup. My picks and predictions for Saturday’s matches will include brief previews for both matches taking place. Read on for my Colombia vs Uruguay preview with prediction and starting lineup.
Colombia v Uruguay – Saturday, June 28 @ 4pm
The big news surrounding this match has been Uruguay’s loss of Luis Suarez for yet another biting incident. Their team’s decision to rally around him has been utterly baffling considering the bizarreness of the event. Even so, they now must deal with having their leading scorer and most dynamic player absent.
Colombia blazed through the group stages by winning all three of their matches rather convincingly. This included a very strong defensive showing in allowing just two goals. Their best player has been James Rodriguez who has put in three outstanding performances making him worthy of being perhaps the best player of the tournament so far.
Uruguay are going to struggle in this one. Colombia has a solid defensive line and Uruguay are now without their best player. Edinson Cavani was starting to look good, but that seemed to be mostly because of Luis Suarez and his movement on the pitch. Now Cavani will likely be partnered with the aging Diego Forlan.
My prediction is a Colombia win. There has been too much off the field drama for Uruguay to truly concentrate on match preparation and I’m sure that can’t help. Colombia has a very strong squad and they should be able to take advantage of the frailties in Uruguay’s midfield and defense.
