Liverpool started out flying with a 2nd minute goal from Stewart Downing. They doubled their lead in the 18th minute with a fantastic through ball for Luis Suarez who got his second off a free kick in the 34th. Ali Al Habsi should have saved after the deflection, but let it slip under his body. At the other end Pepe Reina made some fantastic saves to keep Wigan out as Liverpool took a 3-0 lead into the half.
The second half featured Luis Suarez completing his hat trick after making a great run into the box. Liverpool largely cruised through the second half for the win, but credit should go to Wigan for not giving up. They continued to push all the way till the end for a goal, often pushing up into a 3-4-3 in attack. Liverpool’s defense was strong and were able to get back in numbers while also pushing forward in attack.
Liverpool’s win moves them back into 7th place 3 points behind Everton as they continue their bid for a European place. Wigan stay in 17th place, and could remain there depending on what Aston Villa does on Monday.
