It wasn’t long ago that Southampton looked like they were safe and clear of relegation. After two draws and two losses they have been dragged back in alongside Sunderland, Norwich, Newcastle and Wigan. Their 39 points is only one better than Sunderland.
This is also not a good time for Southampton to be traveling to Sunderland with Paulo Di Canio re-inspiring the Black Cats and leading them on a quest away from the drop. They may have looked absolutely horrid in their loss to Aston Villa, but they turned it around last weekend to hang on to a deserved draw against Stoke City. It was the kind of gritty performance they will need to put in on Sunday as well.
Southampton play quick, attacking football and Sunderland will need to hang on defensively, which they have done at home. They do have a 5-6-7 record with 19 goals scored and 18 allowed.
My prediction is a draw with few goals between them and both teams largely cancelling each other out.
Sunderland (D, L, L, W, W, L, D) 1 – 1 Southampton (W, W, W, D, D, L, L)
