2013-14 EPL Season Preview

The 2013-14 English Premier League is set to start on August 17 and is shaping up to be an exciting season. Last year didn’t have the same exciting end as that of 2011-12, but I would say that it did well to build up for this EPL season.

There were several teams that rose above expectations to make a solid finish in the 2012-13 Premier League Table. Swansea and West Brom were two of these teams that certainly did better than most pundits assumed they would. However, I would say that last season was more about the disappointments.

While Manchester United won the league, and quite comfortably, they did not do so by playing the greatest football. Meanwhile the teams around them all had blips that kept them from making it a closer race. Too many teams started out the season slowly and never really hit their stride until it was too late.

Liverpool made splashes in the news, but it never seemed to be for the right reasons. While Brendan Rodgers claimed they would finish in the top four their seventh place finish was respectable enough.

Queens Park Rangers was certainly the most disappointing team. They started out by going on a massive spending spree in the hopes of finishing in the top ten. Instead they finished bottom of the table with only 25 points, even after bringing in Harry Redknapp to save them. Wigan and Reading were both sent down as well with Wigan nearly getting out as well as winning the FA Cup.

At the bottom of the table the relegation battle was exciting for most of the second half, but once again there was so much disappointment with teams like Fulham, Stoke, Newcastle and Sunderland, all of which should have done far better than they did.

The 2013-14 Premier League season sees the promoted Championship teams of Cardiff City, Crystal Palace, and Hull City joining to test whether they can stay up or will return. All three teams stand a good chance of staying up, but will need to make a strong start to the season.

I think this Premier League season is going to be one of the best in recent years. While there may not be any drastic changes at the top, there are plenty of chances for other teams to make their run at taking a top four place or moving up the EPL ladder and finishing respectively. With all of the new money coming in from the television deals, these places are going to be extremely lucrative.
