2013-14 EPL Season Preview

Arsenal have made almost no changes other than dropping players like Andrei Arshavin. So far the only player they have brought in is Yaya Sanogo despite being linked with Gonzalo Higuain from Real Madrid and continuing to be linked with Luis Suarez from Liverpool. The two areas they need the most strength would be in finding a high quality striker and some help at the back. Gervinho and Olivier Giroud have certainly shown their ability but are not yet top class strikers, and certainly not in the vein of a Luis Suarez, while Podolski is more of an attacking midfielder or winger than a striker.

Last year the Arsenal struggled to start the season well and this is what kept them from finishing any higher than fourth and what made it a much closer finish than it should have been. They made an excellent run in the second half of the season, but this year they cannot afford to take so long to adjust as a team.

Towards the end of the season their defensive frailties seemed to be under control, but they certainly need to get more depth. Szczesny came along well during the season, but it remains to be seen if he can be a top goal keeper. Adding another quality defender, and possibly even a defensive midfielder, would make a huge difference in shaping this Arsenal.

Arsenal’s attacking midfield options are still very strong with players like Jack Wilshere, Theo Walcott, Santi Cazorla, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Lukas Podolski all returning. Giroud was also showing signs of promise and adding Sanogo should improve their depth in attacking, but Giroud will really need to step up this year and prove his worth. Despite all this, they really do need to add a world class striker to carry them forward as well as a top goal keeper.

Arsenal should be able to challenge for trophies this year, even if that might not be the Premier League title. If they are able to add a world class striker and some quality at the back, then there is every chance that they could challenge the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City for a first or second place finish. However, my prediction for Arsenal this season is their most disappointing yet. I think they will crash out of the Champions League, but even more so, they will fail to qualify this year and end up fifth, or even sixth, in the EPL. Tottenham has done much better business in the transfer season and with the window rapidly slamming shut, they have yet to bring in any signings of note. They cannot afford to get off to a slow start this season like they did last year, but haven’t made any signings to show they want to start out well.
