The 2013-14 EPL season was Southampton’s not an easy one, but they managed to put together enough wins to stay up in the Premier League. They ended the season in 12th place on 41 points just five above the drop zone and had to so after sacking Nigel Adkins and bringing in Mauricio Pochettino.
Thus far Southampton hasn’t made many changes in the summer transfer window, bringing in only two players, midfielder Victor Wanyama and defender Dejan Lovren. With these two players they are hoping to strengthen two areas of weakness. With a -11 goal difference last year they weren’t the worst team, but they will be hoping to improve on this area and move towards a positive goal difference.
Pochettino will be hoping to bring stability to the team for a full season despite ending the season going 1-4-1 in their last six games. They do have quality throughout the team including forward Rickie Lambert who was given a call up to the England national team for their midweek match against Scotland. In midfield they have added Victor Wanyama to join Morgan Schneiderlin, Adam Lallana, Jason Puncheon, Gaston Ramirez, and Guilherme Do Prado. Defensively Pochettino has given Kelvin Davis the number 1 shirt with Artur Boruc backing him up which should give them some competition and only make them better.
Southampton need to boost their defensive record this term if they want to avoid another relegation battle. Even more than this, they need to become more consistent with their play against teams around them. Too often they played out draws against the teams that they were also competing with in the lower half of the table.
My prediction for Southampton this year is another battle at the bottom of the table. They should be able to pull out of it and survive another season, but it will be a difficult 2013-14 EPL season for them.
