Premier League Preview for Aston Villa v Liverpool along with Predictions for every result in the EPL. Follow up each match with results and video highlights posted later in the week.
Both Aston Villa and Liverpool began their 2013-14 EPL seasons with wins. My brother in law likes to point out that Liverpool scored the first goal of the new Premier League season as well as getting the first win. Aston Villa got themselves what is probably the first big shock of the year.
Aston Villa played very well in their 3-1 away win over Arsenal. They didn’t have much possession (only 46%) and didn’t have a whole lot of shots (9 shots, with 4 on target), but they took their chances well. Albeit, two of their goals came on penalties, one of which may or may not have been a penalty depending on who you ask, but they got themselves into dangerous areas and forced the decisions to be made.
This is contrasted with Liverpool who were quite dominant against a scrappy Stoke City team. Liverpool had 52% possession, took 26 shots and had 11 on target, managing only one goal. They could easily have drawn or even lost the match. Simon Mignolet was shaky at times, but also saved Johnathan Walters’ penalty to keep the clean sheet.
My prediction is a draw. Aston Villa is at home and that will give them a slight edge and a boost as well. This will be Liverpool’s chance to stake their claim on a higher position in the EPL this season. This fixture is one that Liverpool needs to look at taking as a win. Aston Villa’s offense will not be something to be scoffed at by any club this year and with Liverpool’s shaky defense, there should be goals in it.
Form: Aston Villa (W, ?) Liverpool (W)
Prediction: Aston Villa 2 – 2 Liverpool
