This EPL match will be a precursor to the relegation battle to come later in the season. Both teams have something of a new start this season with Crystal Palace being promoted to the EPL and Stoke City replacing long time manager Tony Pulis with Mark Hughes. Both teams showed some positive signs in their first match despite coming out losers.

Stoke City had 10 shots with 4 on goal against Liverpool despite being dominated in possession. In many ways their defense is what kept them in the match, particularly Asmir Begovic and his ten saves. If Johnathan Walters had done better with his penalty shot they could have come away with a draw. One positive for Stoke fans to look at is their passing with 416 total passes at 81% accuracy. Even more profound for Stoke was their 10.3% of passes being long passes, quite a change from their past.

Crystal Palace showed heart against a tough Tottenham team and kept the score to a 1-0 loss with the one goal coming from the penalty spot. They did get 3 of their 5 shots on target, but need to do better with creating chances. They managed only 361 passes at 71.5% passing accuracy which needs to be improved on.

My prediction is a win for Stoke City, though it could end up a draw if Crystal Palace comes out strong. Both teams began their season against tough opposition and this will be a better test of how they will do this season.

Form: Stoke City (L)     Crystal Palace (L)

Prediction: Stoke City 2 – 1 Crystal Palace
