Champions League Predictions and Preview Week 3

UEFA Champions League Predictions

The group stages of the UEFA Champions League has reached week three as matches are set to be played this Tuesday and Wednesday. Here are my predictions and preview as the next round of matches prepare to kick off.

Tuesday’s Champions League Matches:

Group E: Schalke 04 have jumped out to a quality start in the Champions League having won both of their matches and scoring four goals. FC Basel surprised many by beating Chelsea away in the first round while Chelsea were able to bounce back in the second week with a 4-0 win over Steaua. This sets up the third week’s matchup of Schalke v Chelsea. It should be a great match which I’m predicting as a draw, although either side could come away with a win. FC Basel should be able to get an away win over Steaua Bucharest to keep the pressure on Chelsea and Schalke.

Group F: Arsenal top the group having won both of their matches and scoring four goals while allowing just one. Napoli and Dortmund both have one draw and one loss with Napoli beating Dortmund in the first week. Marseille sit at the bottom of the group having lost both of their matches and scoring one goal and allowing five. My prediction is for Arsenal to edge Borussia Dortmund at home while Napoli will beat Marseille in France.

Group G: This group is probably the most open of all the Champions League groups. At the moment Atletico Madrid top the group with two wins. Under them FC Porto has one win and one loss while both Austria Vienna and Zenit St. Petersburg both have one draw and one loss. My predictions for the group are for Atletico Madrid to continue winning by beating Austria Vienna while FC Porto should be able to get all three points over Zenit at home.

Group H: Barcelona have, predictably, begun their Champions League campaign by winning both matches and scoring five goals while allowing none. AC Milan stuttered against Ajax in round two with a 1-1 draw and will be facing Barca this week. Celtic are at the bottom of the group having lost to both AC Milan and Barcelona. My prediction is that Barcelona will be able to come away from Milan with a win while Celtic and Ajax will be held to a draw. Although, with Celtic at home, it is always a possibility that they get a win.

Wednesday’s Champions League Matches:

Group A: Manchester United and Shakhtar Donetsk are level on points having both won one and lost one. Bayer Leverkusen have some good attacking options, but lack a bit at the back. Real Sociedad look like the most likely candidate to finish last in the group.

Group B: Real Madrid have started their Champions League season with two stunning wins scoring 10 goals and allowing just one. Juventus have not been nearly as hot with their two draws. Galatasaray were one of the better teams in the tournament last year, but have struggled to get results with only one draw and one loss, which is the same record as FC Copenhagen. Most worryingly for Copenhagen is their lone goal scored. Real Madrid have the quality to beat Juventus at home and my prediction is for them to win as well as Galatasaray taking all three points from Copenhagen.

Group C: Paris Saint-Germain top Group C having won both of their matches while scoring seven goals and allowing just the one goal away to Olympiakos. Olympiacos and Benfica face each other having both won one and lost one. Benfica gets a slight edge in this since they are the home team. PSG should be able to continue their form against Anderlecht who have yet to score a goal in the UCL this year.

Group D: Bayern Munich have continued their Champions League form by winning both of their matches and scoring six goals while allowing one. Manchester City started their campaign with a 3-0 win, but looked out of their league in a 1-3 loss to FC Bayern. Viktoria Plzen are almost certainly going to finish bottom of this group while CSKA Moscow will be battling to take second. Their home match against Manchester City could be one of the decisive fixtures for them if they can get a result. This is one match that could go either way, but with City traveling, I’m predicting CSKA can get at least a draw. Bayern Munich will certainly be too strong for Plzen and it’s only a matter of how many goals are scored.
