Premier League Preview for Sunderland v Newcastle United along with Predictions for every result in the EPL. Follow up each match with results and video highlights posted later in the week.
The Tyne-Wear derby is one of the biggest derbies in the Premier League. Over the last six meetings, dating back to 2010, Sunderland has won only one of those, with three draws and two Newcastle United wins. In this time there have been 16 goals with Newcastle scoring nine and Sunderland scoring seven and one clean sheet each.
Sunderland come into the match in a similar situation to April’s derby having just brought in a new manager and being in the relegation zone. The bad part is that they have only one point from a draw while allowing a league high 20 goals. In this time they have scored just five averaging less than a goal per game with just over 12 shots per game for a 5% conversion rate. They also average only two shots on target per game and 42% possession rate.
Newcastle United, meanwhile, have scored a total of 11 goals while taking 16 shots per game (averaging 5 on target) and an average of just over one goal per game for an 8% conversion rate. They have had slightly better possession rates with 48% and have an 81% pass success rate.
Over their last five matches Newcastle has scored two goals in each match to get the bulk of their 11 goals. They have also not kept a clean sheet in this time and allowed 10 goals (14 on the season).
Predicting derbies is always more difficult than a normal match and this one is no different. My prediction is for a Newcastle win. They are the stronger side and have form on their side as well as the better goal scoring. However, they have not been sound defensively and have several players out with injuries or suspensions. Sunderland might be able to get something out of this considering that they will have a week to work with Gus Poyet which could be just what they need.
Betting Odds: Sunderland win: 2.62-2.70; Draw: 3.30-3.40; Newcastle win: 2.65-2.80
Form: Sunderland (L, L, L, L, L, L) Newcastle (W, W, L, L, W, D)
Prediction: Sunderland 1 – 3 Newcastle United
