This is certainly the biggest match of the weekend and should be an interesting match, regardless of the outcome. Both teams had midweek Champions League matches on the road, but with differing outcomes leaving them each at the top of their respective groups.
As the current Champions of the Premier League, they are the team to beat in this match. United will have a bit of an advantage as the team playing at home, even if Old Trafford isn’t the fortress it once was. They have already allowed 13 goals this season while scoring 17. United come into this match with a 5-2-3 record and really can’t afford to lose any more if they want to keep up their title challenge.
Manchester United have only two clean sheets this season, with the last one coming in their 2-0 win over Crystal Palace way back on September 14. They are undefeated in their past four matches while scoring nine goals and allowing five. Against Arsenal, Man United could exploit the high line that Arsenal have preferred using in the Premier League this season. This could certainly be a weakness that players like van Persie, Rooney, Kagawa and Januzaj can exploit.
In head to head matchups United has won 8 out of the last 9 home games against Arsenal and have scored at least two goals in three of the last home matches against Arsenal in all competitions.
Arsenal’s midweek match against Borussia Dortmund was a fantastic win and one that was tactically decisive. Against United I would expect them to push up and play a higher tempo game, especially with some of the defensive frailties that they have shown this season.
Arsenal sit at the top of the EPL table with 25 points and an impressive 8-1-1 record. They have scored the second most goals in the league with 22 while allowing nine. They have only one more clean sheet than United with three this season, which includes last week’s 2-0 win over Liverpool. They have scored two or more goals in seven out of their 10 games this season.
Manchester United may have Michael Carrick, Tom Cleverly, and Danny Welbeck available, but look likely to be without Rafael and Jonny Evans.
Arsenal should be getting back Mathieu Flamini, which would be a huge boost for them tactically. The Gunners will most likely be missing Jack Wilshire, Theo Walcott, Sanogo, Lukas Podolski, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Diaby.
Over their past six meetings Manchester United holds a clear advantage with four wins, one draw and one Arsenal win. My prediction is a draw with both teams scoring at least one goal. This is definitely a match that could go either way. Both teams have looked good in the past several matches and both teams have had some weaknesses that have been exploited. I wouldn’t be surprised by any result in this match. It should be noted that in the head to head of David Moyes vs Arsene Wenger they have played 17 matches with Wenger winning 10, five draws and two wins for Moyes.
