The Saints remarkable start has continued with their 1-1 draw at Stoke City. A win would have taken them up as far as second in the table, but for a shocking goal by Asmir Begovic. With the draw Southampton are in sixth, level on points with both Everton and Manchester City with 19. They have looked their best defensively and boast the second best defensive record in all of Europe, having allowed only four goals. They haven’t been too bad on offensive either having scored 11. They have scored at least one goal in each of their last six matches.
Hull City have also started out this season quite well. Their 14 points is enough to put them in tenth place in the table. Hull’s season has been rather up and down, but they have been able to string together several results. They have managed to keep a respectable four clean sheets, but have scored more than one goal in a match just once, in their 3-2 win over Newcastle. They really should have done better against 9 man Sunderland last weekend. This was a match in which they had 25 shots, but managed to get only two of those on target, with 86% possession.
Southampton holds the advantage in their past six meetings have won four, drawn one and one win for Hull City. I’m predicting another Southampton win, though this will be a difficult one for them considering how well Hull has set up this season. Hull could come away with a draw in this one, but will need to control the midfield to be able to do so. This is a match crying out for Southampton domination with their home possession at an average of almost 60% while Hull’s away possession is just under 40%.
