Newcastle United really turned on the style in their 5-1 win over Stoke City on Thursday. Sure, most of this came after Stoke went down to 9 men, but they did need to come from behind after giving up the early goal as well as missing a penalty. In the match they had a 90% pass success rate along with 58% possession which led to 27 shots and eight on goal.
Arsenal had to come from behind in their match against West Ham United, but did so by then scoring three goals and dominating the match. Arsenal could have easily been down by more than just the one goal with West Ham playing well in the first half, but Arsenal’s high possession (66%) and chances (29 shots with 8 on target) was too much.
So far this season Newcastle has gone out against the bigger sides with a game plan and done well for the most part. This has included a 2-2 draw against Liverpool, 2-0 win over Chelsea, and 0-1 wins away to Tottenham and Manchester United. I’d expect Alan Pardew to set up his team to absorb Arsenal’s attacks and try to break quickly. They certainly have a chance to come away with a result.
I’m predicting a draw, but this is another one that could go either way to be honest. Newcastle has played very well lately and have lost just one match at home this season. Arsenal are top of the league and scoring goals, three in each of their last three away matches, and have lost just twice on the road. In head to head matches Arsenal holds the edge with three wins and two draws in their last six.
Betting Odds: Newcastle win: 3.98-4.20; Draw: 3.57-3.75; Arsenal win: 1.92-2.00
Form: Newcastle (W, L, W, D, W, W) Arsenal (W, W, D, L, D, W)
Prediction: Newcastle United 2 – 2 Arsenal
