The Gunners may not have been on top at Christmas, but will start 2014 in first with 42 points. Their 1-0 win over Newcastle United was a trial in patience. They really needed to work hard to break down a team that set themselves up to frustrate. After getting the goal they needed they worked hard to hold onto that lead.
Arsenal have had a solid record at home this season with just one loss and two draws to go with their six wins. They are also unbeaten in 26 out of their last 29 matches in the Premier League.
Injury update: It now looks as though Arsenal’s injury worries are building with Mesut Ozil, Kieran Gibbs, Aaron Ramsey, Thomas Vermaelen, and Nacho Monreal being joined by Olivier Giroud. They will also have last minute fitness tests for Thomas Rosicky, Jack Wilshire and Theo Walcott. This certainly could make a difference in the scoreline, particularly if they are without so many of their attacking threats.
Cardiff’s roller coaster season continued with their dramatic 2-2 draw on Saturday. While they had gone up 2-0 by half time, they were unable to hold on and were eventually pegged back twice leading to their odd owner, Vincent Tan, booing the team.
This draw has led to Cardiff being unable to win in eight of their last nine matches as well as their last six away matches in the Premier League. While they aren’t quite in the relegation zone yet, they are not far off as they sit in 16th place with 18 points, only two ahead.
My prediction is for an Arsenal win. Cardiff have really struggled for results lately whie also struggling to score. Meanwhile Arsenal have continued to string together results. In their last six home matches they have kept four clean sheets.
