In Liverpool’s last eight matches they have just two matches in which they have not won, the 2-1 losses away to Manchester City and Chelsea. In the six that they won they have scored at least two goals, but have only kept two clean sheets.
Liverpool has won their last seven home Premier League matches and Luis Suarez is far and away the leading scorer with 22 goals so far.
While Aston Villa may have lost to Arsenal at home, the 2-1 loss had several positives to take away from it. It was really a match of two halves with Arsenal dominating the first and Aston Villa getting themselves into it in the second. The difficult part was that they had already given up the two goals and were chasing the game for the better part of 60 minutes.
It was a match in which they actually had more shots than Arsenal (11 to 8) despite having just 36% possession. There were certainly portions of the second half in which Aston Villa looked good, but they just couldn’t break down a solid Arsenal defense.
This season Aston Villa has reverted to playing a mostly 3-5-2 that becomes a 5-4-1 on defense and relies on “hit and hope.” They average 383 passes per game and 18% of those are long balls. This hasn’t been popular with fans, but they have gotten 20 goals this season with Christian Benteke’s goal against Arsenal increasing his tally to five this season.
Liverpool is my pick to win. While Liverpool hasn’t been dominant in their last six head to head matches, they do have three wins and a draw with Aston Villa getting two wins in this time and Liverpool outscoring Villa 7-6.
Liverpool’s recent form has been outstanding against teams below them with just two losses all season against teams that are below them in the table.
Aston Villa could benefit from Liverpool’s recent difficulties in defense, and get a goal, but it looks highly unlikely that they will get enough to pull off a result.
