For the Fantasy Premier League Gameweek 22 I will be focusing on midfielders to think about picking up for either long term or a quick pick me up. Midfield is a great place for teams, both in real teams and in fantasy, to pick up some points. A quality midfield can really carry a team especially considering that many players can pick up points at both the offensive and defensive ends of the pitch.
Picking up one of the top midfielders like Eden Hazard, Oscar, Yaya Toure, Mesut Ozil, Steven Gerrard, or even Aaron Ramsey, would all be easy choices, but they are all expensive and can sometimes overburden your squad. There are plenty of times where it is better to look around for some quality players in the middle spectrum of cost. Here are some decent players to look at picking up. As a point of comparison I will be using prices and points taken from the Barclays Premier League official Fantasy Premier League game.
The focus will be on quality players that are currently listed as healthy and have a cost under £7m. They also need to be players that have been able to play in at least 1400 minutes.
Jordan Henderson of Liverpool currently costs just £6.4m and has been getting several weeks of solid points. His lowest points total all season came in their loss to Chelsea in which he had just two points. In the past six matches he has scored a total of 43 points.
Believe it or not Fulham’s Steve Sidwell is a quality buy at just £5.1m. While he was quite shaky at the start of the season he has put in some excellent performances more recently including 11 points and nine points in the last two weeks respectively.
Pete Whittingham of Cardiff City has been one of the most consistent fantasy Premier League midfielders. While he has had several weeks of 1, 2 or 3 points, he has played the full 90 minutes of all 21 matches to date. In that time he has scored five or more points on ten occasions as well as scoring four points five times. At £5.4m he is a fantastic bargain.
Hull City’s holding midfielder Tom Huddlestone has been another one of the most consistent players this season and an absolute steal at just £4.9m. He has come very close to playing in all 21 matches. He played 31 minutes in gameweek one and has played all 90 minutes in the 20 matches since then. During this time he has also scored four or more points 15 times with his high of the season being 17 in gameweek 19 when he scored his one goal of the season while providing two goals and a clean sheet.
Jonjo Shelvey of Swansea City is yet another player who has put in some good solid performances, but has not started in quite as many matches. At £5.4m he is another decent buy. He is a little more risky than some of the others due to his personality which can lead to him picking up cards. However, he is also a player that, when in form, can really drive Swansea’s midfield and become a creative force. He has picked up five or more points seven times.
Hopefully some of this can help out with your fantasy team this week and perhaps in the weeks to come as well. As more players pick up injuries it might be necessary to look at some lower priced players to fill in the gaps.
