Spurs actually come into this match second in the form table after going unbeaten in their last six matches with five wins and one draw. In fact, they have just two losses in all competitions in their last eight matches since Tim Sherwood took over as manager. Both of those losses came in cup ties, even if one was to their bitter rivals, Arsenal.
Sherwood seems to have instilled a renewed sense of attacking spirit in the squad. In the six Premier League matches he has managed, Spurs have scored 14 goals and have scored fewer than two goals in their one draw in that time, the 1-1 at home against West Brom.
In Wednesday’s match they have a test of how much of a difference this new manager has made in the team. To now, they have not played a team higher than them in the table. Their most significant win being the 2-1 away win to Manchester United.
Their free flowing, attacking 4-4-2 could meet its match against Manchester City who have been even more free scoring than any other team in the league.
Tottenham do not have any major injury concerns at this time.
Manchester City were nearly the shock of the FA Cup in Saturday’s match. After going down 0-2 at home to Watford they managed to come back and win 4-2, although this had to be done after bringing on their substitutes they hoped to rest for Wednesday’s match.
In the Premier League Manchester City has continued to be dominant and has yet to drop any points at the Etihad. In fact, the only team to get any points at the Etihad in any competition is Bayern Munich with their 3-1 win back in October.
What Manchester City will need to watch out for is the fatigue factor. The last extended break that they had was back in mid-November between the 10th-24th. They have now played 19 matches with no more than four days rest between any one match. It might not catch up with them this week, but it seems inevitable that it will, especially with the frenetic pace at which they play every single match.
While Manchester City are at the top of the form table and have won six in a row, this is one of those matches they really need to win to stay in the race with Chelsea and Arsenal.
Manchester City still have Samir Nasri out with a knee injury while Alvaro Negredo and David Silva could return on Wednesday.
My pick is for a Manchester City win, however, if there is any match in which they are going to drop points, this has to be a good candidate for it. Tottenham has been playing well lately and will make it interesting.
This looks likely to be the match of the week. Both teams are battling for positions in the table and Spurs could pick up a result against a Manchester City side that is certain to be getting tired.
