Saints go into Tuesday’s match against Arsenal after defeating Yeovil Town 2-0 at home in their Fourth Round FA Cup match. This gives them four matches unbeaten in all competitions and has them scoring at least two goals in three of those four.
Southampton may have had a fantastic start to the season, but have stagnated recently and are solidly in the middle of the table. In fact, they are basically the only mid table team at this time. With 31 points they are currently out of the race for a European place, but also far enough ahead of those at the bottom to not be in a relegation battle.
They have excelled in being able to keep possession and have the second highest possession percentage with 57.8% this season. To go along with that they have also conceded the fewest shots with just 10.1 per game allowed. They have averaged 1.3 goals per game which goes up to 1.6 per game when they play at home.
At the moment, Southampton have several injury concerns including Victor Wanyama, Dejan Lovren, and Gaston Ramirez.
The Gunners also came through the fourth round of the FA Cup with a comfortable 4-0 home win against Coventry on Friday. They remain top of the table in the Premier League, but will most likely need a win to stay at the top. With a Tuesday kickoff they have the chance to keep the pressure on Chelsea and Manchester City by winning and ensuring they stay top.
This season Arsenal has averaged two goals per game with a 13% conversion rate which actually increases in away matches going up to 2.1 goals per game and a 15% conversion rate.
This Premier League season they also have the third best goal difference with 43 goals scored (tied for third most) and only 19 allowed (best in the league).
Arsenal also have several injury concerns including Mikel Arteta, Niklas Bendtner, Aaron Ramsey, and Theo Walcott.
My pick is an Arsenal win, but Southampton will push them hard and do their best to make it close. They love to press and will do this all match long making it difficult for Arsenal to get forward. Southampton are second in the league in tackles per game, with 21.3, and third with 12.6 fouls per game.
Arsenal will need to be able to break down Southampton’s solid defensive press while also being wary of losing goals with the Saints quick attacking play.
Betting Odds (Ladbrokes):
Saints win: 4.00; Draw: 3.50; Arsenal win: 1.91
Form: Southampton (L, W, L, L, W, D) Arsenal (D, W, W, W, W, W)
