Bayer Leverkusen play host to Paris Saint Germain in the first leg of their round of 16 Champions League match this Tuesday. In my preview for this match-up I have included my prediction along with betting odds.
Leverkusen has certainly been struggling in recent matches, but have been able to hold on to second place in the Bundesliga. They have had several injury concerns recently including Bernd Leno, Eren Derdiyok, Emir, Spahic, and Robbie Kruse. Emre Can will also be suspended for the first leg.
In the group stages they came through with two losses, both to Manchester United, and one draw. Their qualification for the round of 16 was a bumpy one and they did benefit from being in a group that included Shakhtar Donetsk and Real Sociedad.
In advancing they actually had a -1 goal difference having scored 9 goals and allowing 10, which includes the 5-0 loss to Manchester United.
Paris Saint Germain
PSG came through their group as winners despite losing their last match to Benfica, although that did come at a point when they were already group winners. They scored a total of 16 goals while allowing just five. In this time they also dominated other teams with an average of 64% possession and a 91% pass completion rate (higher than Barcelona).
In the French Ligue 1 they have a rather comfortable five point lead at the top, but have also struggled with complacency at times, including their recent loss in the Coupe de France and the 1-1 draw to Monaco.
While they look likely to be without Edinson Cavani, they still have Ibrahimovic up front, who should be more than enough firepower.
My pick is for a Paris Saint Germain win, provided they do not underestimate their opponents. Bayer Leverkusen may not be in the best of form lately, but they do have the players and ability to produce a shock result.
Betting Odds (Bovada):
Leverkusen win: 21/10; Draw: 12/5; PSG win: 13/10
Recent Form: Leverkusen (L, L, W, W, L, L) PSG (L, D, W, W, D, W)
