Premier League Scores: Result and highlights from the EPL fixture between Newcastle United v Manchester United on Sunday, October 7, 2012

Result: Newcastle United 0 – 3 Manchester United

Where: St. James’ Park (Sports Direct Arena) – Newcastle United

Newcastle United – 0 Manchester United – 3
Jonny Evans (8’)
Patrice Evra (15’)
Tom Cleverly (71’)

Sir Alex Ferguson decided to go with a very different looking side with no wide players, other than the full backs Evra and Rafael. He also decided to start Wayne Rooney, Shinji Kagawa, and Robin van Persie along with Danny Welbeck.

Manchester United started the match in strong attacking form. They did very well to maintain positive possession and work the ball around the box. An excellent back-heel flick in the box from Rooney set up Danny Welbeck who managed to shoot weakly at Newcastle goalkeeper Harper.

Robin van Persie worked hard to win a corner in the 8th minute which lead to the free header goal by Jonny Evans. Rafael came close, but put it well wide, however Steve Harper got very lucky at Welbeck’s lack of clinical finishing when he attempted to dribble out of his box only to have Welbeck strip him of the ball and shoot well wide of the empty net.

Tom Cleverly won a free kick at the top of the area that resulted in Rooney forcing a good save from Harper. The damage then came from the ensuing corner in which Patrice Evra got their second headed goal of the match in the 15th minute.

At the other end Newcastle finally got their first good chance but saw Gutierrez shoot just wide. Following this Newcastle got their first real chance at possession in the match and was able to move the ball around while also settling a bit more in the midfield and defensive ends. This period also saw Man United start to sit back more and try to work the counter-attack.

The game started to really heat up with 4 yellow cards shown in the span of 12 minutes for 4 of the combined 8 tackles up to that point. Danny Welbeck made a great run into the box using his speed to get past the defenders, but his cross went into empty space with nobody making a run into the box.

The second half started off with Newcastle really pushing the offense. Goal line technology will be mentioned as another controversial call came into play. Newcastle thought they had a goal as the ball came very close to crossing the line. In the end the linesman got it right as replays showed the ball did not appear to completely cross the line.

In the 71st minute Tom Cleverly got his first Premier League goal with his cross going in for the goal of the week. United’s build up to the goal was excellent and I’m sure he was attempting to cross the ball to the far post, but instead it curled into the far corner of the net just out of Harper’s reach.

Manchester United looked excellent in the first 20 minutes and played the best they have all season long. This was followed by a much more even match as Newcastle was able to get themselves back into it. Newcastle worked hard and their fans were fantastic staying behind them the whole way and creating a spectacular atmosphere. Perhaps their biggest problem was not being able to get enough shots on target (14 shots, 2 on goal compared to Manchester United’s 13 and 8). Even though this could be due as much to not doing well with chances as with United’s defense who finally picked up a clean sheet with David de Gea in goal as well.

On another note, I really enjoyed having Gary Neville doing color commentary for this one. I think he is the best pundit out there and provides the most neutral and insightful analysis of anyone in the business.
