Group G is perhaps the true group of death. With Germany, Portugal, the United States, and Ghana, it is packed full of talented teams and there is a chance of nearly any permutation of teams advancing in from the group.
The loss of Marco Reus due to injury is a heavy blow for Germany, but should not prevent them from finishing top of Group G. Germany is also third favorites to win the World Cup with 11/2 odds to do so. There is talent scattered throughout this team and a proven goal-scorer with Germany’s all-time leading scorer, MIroslav Klose, who needs just one more goal to equal Ronaldo’s (Brazil) record of World Cup goals. One of the bigger issues with Germany is the fact that there are some question marks at the back and injury concerns, particularly with several defenders.
The Black Stars will be an interesting team at this year’s World Cup. They are the bogey team for the U.S., who have yet to defeat Ghana in the World Cup. They were denied a chance at the 2010 quarter finals when captain Asamoah Gyan missed his penalty against Uruguay. They have a very strong midfield in both talent and strength. This team will cause some problems and will push every single other team in this group for a shot at another round of 16 finish.
Believe it or not, this Portuguese team is made up of 11 players and not just Ronaldo (Cristiano). While he certainly did carry them through their playoff against Sweden, there are still a lot of good players on this team. Tenth favorites at 25/1 odds to win the World Cup, and yet they are still ranked third in the world. A bit baffling, but that is how these things go. This midfield includes players of quality such as Nani, William Carvalho, and Joao Moutinho. With Ronaldo’s recent injury concerns, they will need to rely much more on the rest of this team, but don’t expect Ronaldo to miss a match.
The United States comes into this World Cup with some interesting expectations. There are those who believe this is the year for them to get to the Quarter-Finals, while others believe they won’t even make it out of the group stage. I believe they have a strong chance at the former. In looking over where these matches will be played, the U.S. stands a good chance of being able to endure the various weather changes and get the results they need to advance, though it will not be easy for them. In the end, I think they will come up short.
Germany – Winner
Portugal – Runner-up
United States – Third
Ghana – Fourth
This is probably going to be the closest, most hotly contested group out of all of them. I do believe that any one of these teams could win the group and advance depending on how results go. If the United States can get a win over Ghana, I think that will give them the edge in getting second. There are so many different variations in how this group will finish, and I wouldn’t be surprised by any of them.
The winner of Group G will play the runner-up in Group H, most likely Russia or South Korea. The runner up in Group G will play the Group H winner, which will probably be Belgium.
