World Cup Predictions: Group E Round 2 Preview

World Cup 2014 Predictions

France has taken control of Group E and have already qualified for the knockout stages. Behind them, Ecuador and Switzerland are seeking a place in the next round.

France has such a large goal difference that they will almost certainly top the group even if they lose. Honduras is already out, but could keep the Swiss from advancing. If Ecuador and Switzerland both win, Switzerland would need to win by a goal margin of three goals or more than Ecuador’s win. If both teams draw, then Ecuador will advance with a better goal difference.

Ecuador v France – Wednesday, June 25 @ 4pm:

Ecuador need to win to ensure their place in the round of 16, but they are going to struggle against a France side that is really turning on the style. They are rapidly staking their own claim on a possible place in the finals. They have given up just two goals, both in their 5-2 loss to Switzerland, and both came at a point when the match was basically over and they were playing it out.

My prediction is another France win. They have all the keys needed to advance and have been playing progressively better each match. Ecuador could bring some surprises and get a result, but it’s going to be very difficult for them.

Honduras v Switzerland – Wednesday, June 25 @ 4pm:

Honduras have already been eliminated, but could keep Switzerland from moving forward. This Swiss team is still quite young, which could leave this team wanting against a tough Honduras squad. Honduras have gotten rather lucky so far in regards to the number of fouls and cards they have been penalized for. They do not play a very nice game and this could leave the Swiss injured and well off of their game.

Still, my prediction is for a Switzerland win to allow them to advance. It may not be a pretty match and if the Swiss do win, it will be well deserved.
