Should FPL Managers Replace Bony with Gomis?

Fantasy Premier League TipsThis week’s fantasy Premier League tips follow the transfer of Wilfried Bony along with who FPL managers should find to replace him. Bafetimbi Gomis is left as Swansea’s striker, meaning that FPL managers now have a choice about whether to pick him up or not. Read on for my analysis and tips regarding Gomis and his place in fantasy soccer.

The transfer of Wilfried Bony from Swansea City to Manchester City leaves a massively gaping hole in the Swans front line. Gylffi Sigurdsson has had a spectacular season due to his link up play with the center forward, which means that there is some hope that a replacement could slot in and take over where Bony left off.

At the moment the best option as a replacement at Swansea is Bafetimbi Gomis. The French striker has already logged 713 minutes over 18 matches this season for the Swans, but has only just recently been starting regularly in the three matches following Bony’s departure for the African Cup of Nations.

In that time he has scored 2, 5, and 2 fantasy Premier League points with just one assist. This season he has 33 total fantasy points with his scoring coming from one goal, one assist and two clean sheets. Nothing outstanding so far from Gomis whose highest points tally has been 7 from gameweek 11 when he scored his lone goal during a 15 minute substitute appearance against Arsenal.

Still, Gomis does have the potential to make a difference. There is a reason that Swansea bought him based on his ability playing for Lyon in Ligue 1 last season. Here is a comparison in statistics on a per game basis:

Bony (Swans) Gomis (Lyon) Gomis (Swans)
Goals 0.45 0.42 0.06
Shots 3.30 2.61 1.89
Accuracy 54% 54% 22%
Chances Created 0.95 0.55 0.56
Key Passes 0.85 0.52 0.56
Assists 0.10 0.03 0

Stats taken from Squawka.com

There is a pretty big difference between the French Ligue 1 and English Premier League, but the stats are there to show that there is potential for him to adjust and make up the difference.

While Gomis is certainly not a Wilfried Bony at this point, he does have a chance to prove his value at Swansea and stake a claim for a place as Bony’s replacement. It will take some doing and could mean an adjustment of tactics for Swansea.

At this point I would say that you are better off finding someone else as a replacement for Bony. While the £6.5M price tag may look nice, he’s playing for a team that is struggling and, so far, he has not been able to prove that he can replace Bony up front and become a second tier striker.

With other forwards like Charlie Austin, Saido Berahino, and Harry Kane available for as much or even cheaper, there isn’t much point in picking a forward who isn’t anywhere even near the top 25 in fantasy Premier League points.

If you are playing in a large format Togga league that leaves you with few choices up front, he could be a gamble worth taking, however, at this point he is a gamble that should only be looked at if there aren’t any other decent options.
