Premier League Predictions: Todd’s Week 33 EPL Match Picks

Week 33 Premeir League PredictionsThis weekend has an abbreviated set of matches with three Premier League teams participating in the FA Cup semifinals. Instead of the normal ten matches we are limited to seven.

Even with Arsenal, Aston Villa, Liverpool, Hull City, and Liverpool not playing this weekend there are plenty of excellent games to follow and watch.

There isn’t an early game to kick off on Saturday morning leaving us with four 10:00 starts (Eastern Time) followed by the 12:30 match. I would say that the pick of the lot for the 10:00 games is certainly Crystal Palace v West Bromwich Albion.

Palace head into week 33 with four consecutive wins and have scored 11 goals in those four games. In addition, they have limited opponents to just 1 goal per game in each of their last 6 matches. On the other side West Brom have now lost 5 of their last 6 matches while allowing 14 goals and scoring just 5.

Elsewhere in the morning matches Leicester and Burnley are hoping to push the teams above them and get results against Swansea and Everton respectively. These could both be good matches as well considering what these two teams need to do in order to avoid relegation.

Stoke and Southampton have hit a bit of a stutter in their form, but the Saints picked up a win last weekend to give them some momentum. I’m predicting them to continue this against a Stoke team that has been sleepwalking to four consecutive matches without a win, including 3 losses in this time.

Sunday’s matches include four teams that have not won in their last two matches. Manchester City are slipping down the table having dropped from second down to fourth. Tottenham look like they are out of the running for a European place next season. West Ham United looked good earlier in the season, but now that they are no longer playing for anything, they don’t look very interested. This is certainly true of Newcastle United who look like they haven’t got a clue as to how to play and have lost their last five matches in a row.

Both of these matches are very hard to predict due to their recent form. You would think that at some point at least one of these teams would turn the corner and find their form again. Of the four teams I could see Man C and Tottenham Hotspur coming away with wins, but that has more to do with their opponents woeful play recently.

With Arsenal playing in the FA Cup this weekend, the team at the joint top of the form table, Manchester United, has a chance to overtake the Gunners for second place in the EPL table. However, they do face league leaders Chelsea who continue to find wins despite their poor play.

There are many factors weighing on this match including injuries. At the time of writing Diego Costa is still listed as being out, but it is difficult to say if this is reality or another mind game from Jose Mourinho. I, for one, will only trust that he is not playing if he is not on the team when the whistle blows.

In addition to Costs, Loic Remy is unavailable, meaning that Didier Drogba will most likely start up from for the Blues.

On the Red Devils side their biggest injury doubt is Michael Carrick who was taken off near the end of the Manchester Derby last weekend and walked straight down the tunnel for treatment. He has been a key player during United’s recent run of wins and if he is indeed unavailable, it will be a massive blow.

When these two teams met earlier in the season United was able to scrape a last gasp equalizer and did not play well. It was clearly a time of transition for a team that has looked exponentially better in the last month.

Chelsea were absolutely dominating teams earlier in the year, but have not looked that great in the last month or more. Despite that they manage to win games which will make this a scrappy match. I would say that recently the team has looked rather tired and at times, jaded. Too often they have relied on the likes of Eden Hazard and Cesc Fabregas.

Interestingly enough, the last time that Manchester United defeated Chelsea was back on October 28, 2012 in their 3-2 win over a 9 man Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

I’m predicting a draw for Saturday’s late game, but realize that this one could go either way including a goal scoring fest for one or both sides.

That wraps up the predictions for week 33 in the Premier League. I generally use these previews as a way to set my match-ups for fantasy Premier League picks as well and will plan to put out my tips later in the week.
