Week 9 Premier League Scores and Highlights

Coming up is what I think will be the weekend of draws. Many of the teams facing one another this weekend are fairly evenly matched and will end up cancelling one another out. Despite this, there are many great matches and, as always, things could really go either way in many of the matches. I do believe that I’m playing it safe in predicting so many draws, but many of these matches are so close that it’s going to be interesting.

Aston Villa v Norwich City

Paul Lambert comes up against his former club this weekend. Aston Villa have not fared well lately, but Norwich hasn’t been looking so great lately either, except for their shock win over Arsenal last weekend. Both teams are just barely above the relegation zone with Aston Villa on 5 points in 17th place and Norwichon 6 points in 15th place. A win for either team could be hugely beneficial. I really don’t think that either team will come out on top in this one. I’m predicting a 1-1 draw, though it could very easily be 0-0 the way they have been playing this season.

Aston Villa: L, W, D, L, L               Norwich City: L, W, L, L, W

Arsenal v QPR

Neither team has played exceptionally well lately. QPR may have had a few bright spots in last week’s draw, but they are still frail defensively. Arsenal continue to struggle to find their way domestically and abroad. They have had some great outings where they have been strong, but then had some very poor showings such as this past week losing to Norwich in the Premier League and Schalke in the Champions League. Arsenal has been such an enigmatic side this season which makes picking them rather difficult. Still, I’m going to go ahead and pick Arsenal to come out on top 2-1 winners.

Arsenal: L, W, W, L, L                            QPR: L, L, L, L, D

Reading v Fulham

Reading has put together a few good outings recently, but have struggled the most defensively, which is where they have been let down most. They were almost able to come away from Anfield with a draw last week. Meanwhile Fulham have been trying to get themselves firmly into the top 10 this season and possibly push for a European spot. Whether this happens or not will depend on whether they can put together a consistent run. Most recently they have had some good results, despite not really playing their best. Unfortunately for Fulham I just don’t think they will get a win at the Madejski. I’m picking a draw for this one because I think they will end up cancelling each other out. Fulham could come away with a win if they are able to hold their own defense together.

Reading: L, W, D, D, L                  Fulham: W, W, L, D, W

Stoke City v Sunderland

Ah yes, Stoke and Sunderland, always seeming to be the perennial spoilers against top sides. Both have played similarly this season and are level on points, although Sunderland do have a game in hand. Both teams have played well in terms of mixing their play between attack and defense. They have both struggled against the larger clubs, but this one could be very interesting with some nice back and forth attacking play. I’m picking another draw with this one, most likely low scoring.

Stoke City: D, L, W, D, L              Sunderland: D, W, W, L, D

Wigan Athletic v West Ham United

Wigan and West Ham have been heading in opposite directions this season with Wigan 2 points above the drop zone and West Ham even with West Brom and Tottenham sitting at 7th. Despite the gap I’m predicting another draw in this one. Roberto Martinez’s Wigan has played some nice football this year, and many times have been unfortunate to get results. West Ham have played rather pragmatic football, but have also been able to grind out the results they need.

Wigan Athletic: L, W, L, D, L                             West Ham: D, L, W, L, W

Manchester City v Swansea City

Over the past week Manchester City has not exactly impressed. They got somewhat lucky to win over West Brom last weekend and failed miserably in Amsterdam. Against Swansea it seems likely they will go for a balance between getting a win at home and attempting to eliminate their defensive errors. Swansea could punish them and get a goal or 2 if they play it right. Manchester City has not been as ruthless in attack as many people thought they would, and instead of relied on timely substitutions to claw back wins. Swansea may have started out the season strongly, but since then have not really shown that they can string together consistent results. Despite this, I think that Swansea will be able to hold it together enough to get a draw at the Etihad.

Newcastle United v West Bromwich Albion

Newcastle has been rather frustrating this season after surprising many with their top 10 finish last year. West Brom on the other hand have continued to impress and climb the table. After 8 matches they have 14 points and sit in 6th place behind Tottenham (also on 14 points). Newcastle are 5 places below them at 4 behind. A win for them would really help close the gap. However, I am predicting that West Brom will be able to hold onto a draw away at St. James’ Park.

Newcastle United: D, W, L, D, W              West Brom: W, L, D, W, L

Southampton v Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham will hope that Bale can return in time for this match and pour on the goals against a Southampton team that is leaking goals like a colander in the ocean. They currently have a -11 goal difference and have allowed 24 goals in 8 matches (a new Premier League record). I’m predicting a Tottenham win, the question is more to do with how many they will score. If Bale does return I would see them scoring more than if he doesn’t.

Southampton: W, W, L, D, L                   Tottenham: W, D, W, L, D

Chelsea v Manchester United
