Looking at gameweek 3 FPL tips with some differentials leading up to the matches prior to the international break. For this week’s FPL tips I want to take a look at some players who are differentials but also somewhat risky picks. These are players that have either just started playing for the team, are playing for a team that may struggle in the future, or haven’t yet picked up big points, but could be on the verge of doing so.
Mason Holgate – £4.5 – 1.5% ownership
The 19 year old Everton defender has already started and completed 90 minutes in the Toffees first two matches of the season. With 9 points (and 2 bonus points in the 2-1 win over West Brom) he is already up there in points with some of last year’s best defenders. So far he has played on the right side of a back 3 in defense and has performed well including picking up an assist against West Brom.
The risk in picking him is that he is young and may not continue to play as frequently, particularly when Ashley Williams is deemed ready to play. The other problem with picking Holgate is that there are already other defenders out there priced in the £4.5 range that will be regular starters. Still, at under 2% ownership, he’s an excellent differential.
Steven Defour – £6.0 – 0.1% ownership
After one match in midfield for Burnley Defour has already picked up 4 points after his 55 minute cameo and is a great differential both in terms of cost and ownership. At less than 1% now is the time to pick him and at just £6.0 his price makes room for more expensive players elsewhere.
In his first appearance he had 1 key pass and 1 assist. While he didn’t pick up any bonus points, this was more likely due to performances of others in the team as well as his limited playing time. As he gets more minutes, I would expect him to pick up more points. He has shown he is the kind of player that will be used as a playmaker.
Burnley’s upcoming fixtures are spotty, but at £6.0 there is room to pick up other players and rotate him. This weekend Burnley travel to Chelsea which is followed by Hull (H), Leicester (A), Watford (H), Arsenal (H), and Southampton (A).
Vincent Janssen – £7.9 – 1.8%
In gameweek 2 Janssen started up front for Tottenham with Harry Kane slotted in behind him. Picking Janssen is the biggest risk in this group. At £7.9 he has a relatively high price tag, especially when you can compare it to other forwards that are under £7 and have already picked up more points than his total of 3.
The thing with Janssen is that there is the possibility of a high upside. If he and Harry Kane can work out a partnership there is the chance of big points from a combination of goals, assists, and bonus points.
Just a reminder to check the injury tables before match day. There are several great options out there including Premier Injuries, PhysioRoom, and the Fantasy Football Scout site. Remember to get your team set before the Saturday morning deadline one hour before the first match kicks off at 11:30 BST.
