After the 3-3 draw against Sevilla on Tuesday, Jurgen Klopp’s men will be hoping they can return to winning ways this weekend when they play host to Chelsea on Saturday. Liverpool, who have 22 points from 12 games, are currently in fifth place in the Premier League table, three points and two positions behind Chelsea.
The Reds look out of the title race but the race for a top four finish is hotting up. Four points separate second placed Manchester United from Liverpool while Arsenal who Liverpool edge out in fifth position on goal difference are beginning to pick up form. Jurgen Klopp and his men will know if they want to make the top four this season, they will have to start performing and be consistent, and Chelsea presents them a perfect opportunity to show that.
A win against Chelsea on Saturday will be a morale booster for Liverpool but Klopp’s side will be without some of their key players. Joel Matip is still an injury doubt but Klopp “thinks” there is a chance of the African being fit for the Chelsea clash.
“He is good,” Klopp said. “I think there will be a big chance he will be ready for Saturday.”
The Cameroon international could be fit for the match, but judging by the quote above he may have to undergo a late fitness test, which he could fail or pass. Nathaniel Clyne is certainly out of the clash against Chelsea as he continues his recovery from injury. The former Southampton star is expected back in February.
Adam Lallana is another player who may not be fit for the Chelsea clash. The former Southampton star is yet to play this season due to a thigh injury and although he was in the squad that traveled to Spain to face Sevilla, he didn’t make the 18 man squad. After the match against Sevilla, Jurgen Klopp said the Englishman “is getting nearer and nearer” to fitness.
