Both of these teams are coming into this match on good form and with everything to play for. Despite having a massively congested fixture list recently Chelsea has somehow managed to keep going and getting wins, thanks to Rafa Benitez.
Rafa’s rotation policy has really been working so far. He has been able to get the most of these players without all of the drama instigated by the likes of John Terry and Frank Lampard that Andre Villas Boas struggled with. Not every match has been convincing, but he has managed to get Chelsea into a consistent run recently.
Andre Villas Boas has been able to take a good team and build upon it. Tottenham has been able to, mostly anyway, avoid their typical end of season drop off. While they have been getting results, theirs have also been less than convincing. Too often they have had to rely on Gareth Bale to rescue them.
The good news is that he is fit. The bad news is that there are several others who are not. Aaron Lennon, Moussa Dembele, Scott Parker, William Galas and Jake Livermore are all listed as injured for Spurs. Chelsea look to be without Ryan Bertrand and Jon Obi Mikel with Eden Hazard as a doubt.
Stopping the attack will the key to this game. I’d expect Tottenham to play a varied tactic of an occasional high line as well as being able to absorb pressure from Chelsea and counter attack. Being without Lennon will hurt, especially since Chelsea can focus on shutting down Bale, but with Bale, there is always the chance for him to pop up with a moment of brilliance. Chelsea will certainly be methodical and relentless in attack.
My prediction is for a rather even game ending in a draw. Tottenham’s speed will be a worry for Chelsea, while Chelsea’s quality of attack could haunt Spurs. Chelsea probably have a slight edge in this one and I would see them winning before Tottenham since they are at home and have the better form.
I would like to see Tottenham win, because I really want this race for Champions League football to remain compelling and to come down to the last day.
